In recent years, the coffee industry has faced increasing scrutiny over its environmental and social impacts. With over 2.25 billion cups of coffee consumed daily worldwide, the demand for sustainable practices has never been more urgent.
Sustainable coffee companies are leading the charge in promoting ethical sourcing, environmental conservation, and social responsibility initiatives. From environmental initiatives to cutting-edge renewable energy developments, here’s how Miko and our partnerships are making a tangible difference in creating a more sustainable coffee future.
The Importance of Ethical Sourcing
Before diving into the details, let’s highlight why sustainability in the coffee industry matters.
The Harsh Reality
- Farmers in unsustainable coffee supply chains often earn 30% to 85% below a living wage.
- Unsustainable practices lead to 130,000 hectares of deforestation annually, harming biodiversity.
These may paint a bleak picture, although things don’t need to be this way. As a consumer, your purchasing choices matter. Through ethical sourcing, we can protect ecosystems, support fair wages, and promote sustainable practices to build a better future for the coffee industry.

The Future Of Miko Coffee: Leading with Sustainability
Sustainability shouldn’t be about following trends – so we aim to set them. Through innovation, we plan to demonstrate how businesses can move towards a sustainable future. Our hope is that initiatives like ours inspire a broader shift across the coffee industry, making sustainability the standard rather than the exception.
Let’s outline some exciting changes happening at Miko, through our investment in renewable energy and environmentally conscious production processes:
Building for the Future
Between 2024 and 2026, Miko has been investing €45 million in a new, energy-efficient production facility in Belgium. The facility is set to be the first of its kind in the world, and will use wind power to roast coffee beans on an industrial scale.
This state-of-the-art turbine will generate enough electricity to power 2,500 households annually, significantly reducing emissions and all reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
The facility will also includes:
- A 35-metre central silo tower with a capacity of 2,095 tonnes.
- 15,000-pallet storage warehouses, consolidating external storage to improve efficiency.
- Advanced roasting technology with space for expansion.
We believe these forward-thinking initiatives will empower us to meet the rising demand for exceptional coffee in a way that respects our planet and champions responsible growth.
Puro Coffee: Sustainability and Ethical Practices
Sustainable production is only the beginning of the coffee supply chain; so these principles must extend back seamlessly from manufacturing to farming. Established in 2005 by Miko, Puro is a pioneering brand that embodies the principles of ethical sourcing, environmental conservation, and community empowerment.

Here are some of the ways Puro’s model have made a difference:
1. Fairtrade Certified
Puro Coffee proudly carries the Fairtrade label, which guarantees that coffee farmers receive fair compensation for their work. This certification promotes:
- Economic Stability by ensuring farmers are paid a fair price, enabling investment in their futures.
- Social Equity by upholding workers’ rights, and fostering gender equality within coffee-growing communities.
- Access to Resources by providing farmers education, healthcare, and agricultural training.
2. Partnerships with the World Land Trust
Since 2006, Puro Coffee has also partnered with the World Land Trust, an organisation dedicated to safeguarding some of the world’s most biologically significant and endangered habitats. Through this collaboration, Puro donates 2% of all coffee sales to fund the creation and preservation of nature reserves in coffee-producing countries.
This long-standing partnership has:
- the creation of 21 rainforest reserves across 13 countries
- Protected over 119,000 acres of rainforest.
- Safeguarded habitats for endangered species, such as the Andean Condor, Black-Handed Monkey, and Three-Toed Sloth.
- Helped offset millions of tonnes of COâ‚‚ emissions, contributing to global climate stability.
3. Finca de Puro Café
Puro’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond conservation. The Finca de Puro Café initiative, located near one of Puro’s protected reserves in Honduras, reimagines coffee farming as a harmonious part of the natural ecosystem. This 6.48-hectare site integrates coffee cultivation with reforestation efforts, creating a balanced environment where wildlife, plant life, and coffee production coexist.
The project’s key goals include:
- Introducing birds, bees, and native species to restore biodiversity.
- Protecting natural lagoons to support local ecosystems.
- Promoting sustainable farming techniques that align with Fairtrade principles.
