In the 2024 climate, factors such as climate change, political instability, and shifting consumer preferences have created a complex environment for coffee producers and distributors. At Miko, we see understanding these market trends and adhering to ethical practices as key responsibilities as a coffee distributor. This blog will discuss the volatile coffee market’s current state, Fairtrade’s role in ensuring stability through minimum pricing, a spotlight on Puro Coffee, and future predictions for the coffee industry.

The Coffee Market in 2024

The global coffee market in 2024 is experiencing a dynamic phase marked by robust growth and evolving consumer preferences, with the Coffee Market size is estimated at £111.37 billion in 2024, and is expected to reach £140.26 billion by 2029.

There are a few key drivers for this growth, including the burgeoning culture of coffee consumption among younger demographics, particularly in countries like India, Italy, the United States, China, Japan, and the Philippines. Especially throughout Asia, where traditional tea culture has long dominated, coffee is rapidly gaining ground, becoming a fashionable and preferred choice among millennials and Gen Z.

The expansion of specialty coffee shops and the third-wave coffee movement has also substantially fueled market growth, with establishments that prioritise high-quality, single-origin beans and artisanal brewing techniques becoming far more common. On top of this, the convenience factor, driven by ready-to-drink beverages, single-serve pods, and instant coffee, continues to appeal to busy consumers. Innovation in flavours, packaging, and preparation methods further expand the modern coffee market’s reach and diversity.

Challenges With Supply

Despite the positive growth trajectory, the coffee market is grappling with extreme challenges, primarily related to global supply shortages, and is unable to keep up with the rising demand. These factors are influenced by:

  • Climate Change: Climate change poses a very significant threat to coffee production. Unpredictable weather patterns, global warming, and increased incidences of pests and diseases are affecting yields. Due to rising temperatures alone, four of the top five producers of coffee in the world (Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, and Indonesia) are projected to have their best areas for growing coffee decrease in size and suitability by 2050.
  • Political and Economic Instability: Key coffee-producing countries, particularly in Central America and Africa, face political and economic challenges. Unrest and geopolitical usses such as the Red Sea crisis have had a huge impact on global trade.
  • Labor Shortages: Coffee production is labor-intensive, and many regions face labor shortages due to migration, aging farming populations, and lack of interest among younger generations to work in agriculture.

The coffee market in 2024 is characterised by a blend of steady growth prospects yet significant supply challenges. As demand continues to rise and supply struggles to keep pace, the impact on global coffee pricing is inevitable.

The Effect On Global Coffee Pricing

The various factors influencing the coffee market are contributing to price increases across the board. Much like the coffee market, the cocoa market is also facing significant disruptions due to climate impacts on harvests. These challenges are symptomatic of broader issues affecting interconnected global agricultural markets.

As of mid-2024, the price of Robusta coffee has reached significant highs, reflecting various market dynamics. In June 2024, Robusta coffee prices were at £3.51 per kilogram, marking an 11.43% increase from the previous month and a substantial 54.63% rise from the same period the previous year.

How This Affects Coffee-Producing Countires

As demand rises and supply shortages persist, many producers and suppliers are compelled to find cost-effective production methods. These price changes have a direct impact on workers and communities in coffee-producing countries, affecting their economic stability and quality of life. The increased costs associated with coffee production, from higher labour expenses to climate-related disruptions, inevitably have a knock on effect on these communities.

Fairtrade: Ensuring Stability Through Minimum Pricing

Fairtrade is recognised globally for its commitment to ethical practices in the coffee industry. By prioritising fair wages, sustainable farming practices, and community development, Fairtrade ensures that coffee production benefits farmers, their communities, and the environment.

Why Fairtrade Has a Minimum Price

Fairtrade’s minimum price policy is a cornerstone for providing financial stability to farmers, acting as a safeguard against volatile market conditions. This policy ensures that farmers receive a price that covers the average cost of sustainable production. Statistics show that during market downturns, farmers benefiting from Fairtrade minimum pricing experience up to 30% more income stability compared to those without such protections. This stability not only allows farmers to cover their basic production costs but also enables them to invest in their farms, improve quality, and adopt sustainable practices themselves.

While this further price increase may raise concerns among consumers, it’s important to note that to the they often translate to a relatively small addition of 1p-2p per cup of coffee. Despite the challenges posed by rising global living costs, the increase is necessary and helps support fair wages and sustainable practices in coffee-growing regions, contributing to the overall well-being of those who depend on this industry for their livelihood.

The Fairtrade Premium

The Fairtrade premium is an additional sum paid on top of the minimum price, specifically allocated for social, economic, and environmental development projects within the community. On average, Fairtrade farmers receive a premium that is approximately 10% of the selling price of their products. This premium is crucial for funding a variety of projects chosen democratically by the community. For instance, in 2022, over £82.1 million in Fairtrade premiums were earned by coffee producers, which all in turn support community initiatives.

Community Development Through Fairtrade

Educational initiatives funded by the Fairtrade premium have resulted in the construction and improvement of numerous schools, directly benefiting over 1.5 million children in coffee-growing regions. Healthcare improvements are another critical area, with premiums being used to build clinics, provide medical supplies, and enhance healthcare services. These investments have increased access to healthcare for thousands of families, infrastructure projects such as building roads, water supply systems, and improving sanitation facilities.

The Future Of the Global Coffee Market

Looking ahead it’s important to remain positive in light on these issues. The future of the global coffee market hinges on the adoption of sustainable and ethical practices, and both consumers and companies will place need to place greater emphasis on sustainable practices throughout the coffee supply chain, from farm to cup.

As consumers grow increasingly aware of the ethical and environmental implications of their purchasing decisions, the demand for Fairtrade and organic coffee will continue to rise.
